Making Money with Affiliate Programs on the Web

Just about every major website that sells a product has an affiliate program. This allows anyone with a website to put up links to these products and receive a commission of each sale made. These products include credit cards, flights, toys, video games, online education, web hosting and just anything imaginable. As a result, there are a lot of website owners making a lot of extra money by placing special links on their sites.

Some owners of websites are making an easy several hundred dollars a month, while others are making several thousand dollars a month from these simple links. In either case, it's a matter of making extra cash for very little initital money down. However, the more work put into affiliate programs, the more money that can be made.

In one exceptional example, the owner of a website about Nintendo game is making upwards of $5,000 a month from links to products in the Amazon.com affiliate program. This is exceptional, but demonstrates how much potential is actually in affiliate programs. This potential has inspired a great number of books and e-books about the subject, and you may have seen one advertised in home business magazines. The question is, what does it take to succeed with affiliate programs?

How Affiliate Programs Work

An online store with an affiliate program basically offers a commission of each sale that you refer to them. You are given some special code to place on your website, and this code allows the store to track sales that come refered from your website. All you need to do is place links either directly to the store, or to the individual products. Each time someone makes a purchase as a result of your referral, you receive a commission, which is usually 10 to 15% of the sale. If it sounds simple, it is.

Finding the Right Affiliate Program

As mentioned above, there are a lot of website owners making a lot of money of affiliate programs. However, there are a lot more owners who are making little or nothing at all with these same programs. Contrary to what the operators of many affiliate programs will tell, you can't expect to throw up some links and sit around expecting to make money. What are the site owners making the money doing different than everybody else? There are many factors involved here, and that's why entire books have been written on the subject. However, there 3 general factors that will always play a role in determining the success or failure of marketing affiliate programs.

Targeted and Untargeted Traffic: If you have a site about travel, do you think putting up links to a bank offering a low interest credit card will do very well? Probably not. If on the other hand, you have a video game website and you put up links to an online store selling games, things will be different. If your visitors are already interested in the product being sold, they are much more likely to buy. As such, targeted traffic is the most important factor when dealing with affiliate programs.

Low Traffic: Even if you have a website with a topic that matches the affiliate product very well, you won't be making much money. If you don't have many visitors, how will your affiliate links get much activity? Since you obviously need some good traffic to succeed, you can't just throw together a cookie cutter website will the provided affiliate promotional text. You'll need unique content. See this link for information about search engine promotion.

Link Placement: Another factor is how you place your affiliate links. Simply placing a link to the online store might get some results, but a little more creative placement will do better. For example, if you have a site with book reviews, would it be better to place a simple link Amazon, or a link to each individual book on each specific review page? Putting the link directly in front of your visitor is a must.

Another issue that can come up has to do with how the affiliate orders are tracked. While books and games are small in price and often purchased as impulse items, many other affiliate programs offer larger ticket items. In this case, many online consumers will not buy the item as soon as they see it. Taking time to think about the purchase, the buyer will come back to the site later on to order. With some affiliate programs, you will not receive a commission if this happens.

Even if the buyer is referred from your site, you will not be credited unless they buy immediately. Fortunately, many affiliate program operators have taken this into consideration and the website owner will still receive the commission. This is typically done through cookies. Make sure you know about this aspect, because it can be a serious factor. For a large list of affiliate programs available, see the Affiliates Directory

Driving Traffic to Your Website

There are many ways to drive traffic to your website, from paid advertising to link exchanges. The easiest and most cost effective is getting your site listed with the countless search engines avilable on the web. Search engines are typically free to list your site, and the overall traffic they generate is well worth the effort of optimizing your site. But that brings up another question. How exactly do you optimize your site for the search engines? The answer isn't simple but it's not too complicated either.

There are a lot of factors that go into website optimization, and these factors determine the difference between a site that ranks in the top 10 search results and a site that gets lost in the hundreds of other similar listings. Many companies that specialize in search engine placement will charge thousands of dollars for there service, and for many website owners this is not a viable option. However, taking a course in search engine marketing is a good option because it will allow you to know first hand the techniques and information those companies mentioned above use to make a fortune optimizing for other sites.
